"Crazy, fun and cool: Malasaña"
"Crazy, fun and cool: Malasaña"
In every big city in the world, there is a neighborhood where it is good
to loose yourself in and wander around. Madrid's is Malasaña, between Camden
Town in London and the Latin Quarter in Paris with a Spanish flair. Young,
lively, popular, colorful. A mix of culture, art, food and night life is
present in the area, in Malasaña, you can find everything you are searching
for.
Named after
Manuella Malasana, a 17-year-old Dos de Mayo Uprising victim, Malasaña is
situated at the north of Gran Via, it is the neighborhood that gave birth the “Movida”
movement at the beginning of the 1980’s. Recently renovated, it attracts now
more and more youth and it is now considered a hip (some even say hipster)
place. There is a melting pot of age, communities and culture that gives a
feeling that everyone is welcome there.
Entering in
Malasaña is like entering in a different city, from large grey streets to
smaller, colorful alleys with the multicolored buildings, walking around
aimlessly is the best way to visit, one can find street art at every corner
that livens it even more. Everywhere you look, you can find something new to
see, a pleasure for photographers.
One of the other
main reason to go to Malasaña is that there are plenty of typical stores, cafes
and restaurants with decorated facades, you can look in the alleys around the
Plaza del Dos de Mayo for vintage clothes shops, like the Flamingo Vintage
Kilo, or just wander around, find a vintage bookstore, have a coffee and
pastries at the Happy Day Bakery or eat a burger on the go at TGB.
